Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, honouring Australian prisoners of war from the Burma-Thailand railway and other Pacific theatres, opened by the Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard.

Dedication of the Sandakan Memorial, Sandakan Memorial Park, Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia, by the Hon Bruce Scott MP, Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence. The memorial commemorates all those Australian and British POWs who died at the Sandakan Camp, on the marches to Ranau and at Ranau between 1942 and 1945.

New Anzac Commemorative Site at North Beach, Gallipoli, opened by Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon John Howard, and the Prime Minister of New Zealand, the Hon Helen Clark.
Nearly two million Australians have served since 1860 in eleven wars and warlike conflicts, plus numerous peacekeeping operations. Over 102,000 have died.
