This advertisement comes from the 1914 edition of Jane’s Fighting Ships, a compendium of all the world’s main navies started by Frederick T Jane in 1898. Vickers Limited was responsible for the construction of the Royal Australian Navy’s first two submarines, the AE1 and the AE2. Vickers began naval shipbuilding activity in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England, in 1897 by buying out the existing naval construction business of the Naval Construction & Armaments Company. Visit the Submarine Heritage Centre website for a short history of the building of submarines on this site. Another relevant website is that of The Dock Museum in Barrow which has a very useful database relating to vessels built by Vickers.
